The Gallery at the Art Institute of Portland presents "Quantum Paintings" by Justin Auld. In this pastoral series of cloudscapes Auld explores the depth of individual interpretation. Auld begins his process with a calculatedly randomized gesture, throwing a paint soaked rag on masonite. He then lays down a progression of aesthetic decisions based on the shapes he finds in that first mark, building a landscape, a fixed location, out of elements of chance and creating a quasi-quantum experience along that intersection of the infinite variables in the rag mark and his own subsequent actions. He invites the viewer to share in that sense of infinite possibility by incorporating some of the core discoveries he made at the start of the work into the clouds that dominate the picture plane, encouraging the viewer to find their own shapes and images.

Justin Auld received his MFA from PSU in 2005 and has been showing in Portland since 2000. Auld is currently an instructor at the Art Institute of Portland.
