Originally from Pleasant Hill, Calif., Germaine decided to pursue a career in fashion after high school. At The Art Institute of Portland, Germaine threw herself into the program and loved every minute of it. A huge fan of working as a team, she worked with several other students last year to design and construct separate collections for an eco-friendly fashion show at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee. She loves to read, and pulls from literature for design inspiration.

Lindsay Chapel
Bachelor of Fine Arts Apparel Design
Fall 2011 graduate

Lindsay Chapel is a designer that is dedicated to bringing beauty and excitement into the world. She likes to marry forward contemporary details with classic ideals. Through fashion Lindsay aims to become inspired in order to continue inspiring others.

Natayla Hebert
Bachelor of Fine Arts Apparel Design
Summer 2011 graduate

After watching the Drew Barrymore film "Ever After" as an eight year old, Natalya Hebert knew that she wanted to be a designer. Her conviction was so great that Natalya enrolled at The Art Institute of Portland even before high school graduation. She has thrived as a designer despite several obstacles. In fact, a minor setback involving car trouble led her to the junkyard and the idea behind her senior collection. Night Junkie is a unique mix of roughness, raw color, and her own interpretation of the formality of the pleat.

Amy Sim
Bachelor of Fine Arts Apparel Design
Current student

Amy Sim began sewing on her mother's Singer Featherweight sewing machine at the age of nine. Throughout junior high and high school, Amy developed her skills and created the majority of her wardrobe. She headed to Oregon State University to major in Apparel Design, where a college professor suggested that a more "practical" degree would be Home Economics Education. Amy listened to that advice and changed her major. For many years, Amy's passion for fashion design was put on the back burner as she raised two sons and became a certified instructor and owner of a Jazzercise franchise. When her sons were in college, Amy made the bold decision to return to school and pursue her dream degree in Apparel Design. Her expertise shows in the beautiful workmanship of the garments she creates. Amy is inspired by the classic fashion icons Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Jacqueline Kennedy, and aspires to design special pieces with clean lines, supreme quality and exquisite details. Amy resides in Portland with her husband Tim, her "biggest fan." Sons, Brennan, 24, is in the MBA program at The University of South Alabama, and Garrett, 21, is a senior at The University of Oregon where he plays basketball for the Ducks. The Art Institute of Portlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06012069922372465646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7898076098004742623.post-72931730649313429562011-10-02T23:50:00.000-07:002011-10-03T16:16:06.783-07:00October at The Steven Goldman Gallery - Song of Tea

The Art Institute of Portland is proud to announce the dedication of our gallery to Dr. Steven Goldman. Initially the designers worked on-site at the Museum, learning the lines and developing an understanding of the history of their chosen vehicle. On returning to the studio they began to manipulate the bloodlines, updating and evolving the characteristics while maintaining a sense of heritage in the vehicle. In this, the last stage of the project, our designers will be installing their concept work in the gallery space; their sketches made at the Museum, the concept work derived, and the final piece – an automotive tape drawing. One of the industry’s oldest design techniques, a tape drawing allows the designer to style the defining lines of a car on a large sale and make immediate adjustments by simply shifting the tape.

Our designers will begin their tape drawings at the start of the exhibition and continue to build them throughout the month. We are encouraging our audience to engage and explore the design process of one of our nations most iconic industries by joining us over the course of the month and watch the process unfold first hand.

Featuring the work of:
Berin B., Kurt Budke, John Reed Dunn, Daniel Fink, Chris Hill, Jake Harwood, Tom Tice, Chris Rickmon, Larry Selbiger and Matt Thornton

Additionally, The Art Institute of Portland is proud to include our entry for the 2011 Portland Adult Soapbox Derby. Five Industrial Design Students entered the highly competitive, deceptively whimsical, and potentially deadly annual showdown. With their very first try the team placed as runner up for Rookie of the Year and 3rd best in engineering (this year’s winner tasted victory for the first time in 12 years). Six different visions through the lens see the trail of manifest destiny, conversations among tribal trees, an architectural of sweep bone, utopian community building, an intensive purity of expression, and a past process drawn into a digital future.

Featuring works by Alexis Abrams, David Brunn, Russ Dodd, Shawn Linehan, Paul Thacker, and Julie Verdini.

Alexis Abrams is an arts educator and documentary photographer, currently based in Portland, Oregon. Her recent work looks at the Western United States from an Easterly vantage point, drawing out the sense of promise and purpose invested in the geologies and histories by two centuries of romantic frontierism. Most recently, Abrams’ images have been featured in exhibits at the Black American West Museum in Denver, CO, and published in The Elements of Photography by Angela Faris-Belt.

David Brunn’s wide-ranging career has allowed him to become an expert in all aspects of photography. He is currently working on the development of a modern process daguerreotype using the traditional silver plated copper and incorporating digital pigment printing in pursuit of the correct density and exposure for a contemporary "mirror with a memory". Brunn’s work is included in many public and private collections including the George Eastman House, Apple, and the Portland Art Museum.

Russ Dodd, a native of Colorado and transplanted to the Pacific Northwest 30 years ago, is a painter, illustrator, printmaker, and photographer. His current body of work stems from a curiosity for the comparative anatomy of canines. As a serious dog trainer and student of canine behavior, Dodd found himself accumulating a variety canine skulls and utilizes photography as an avenue to explore the architecture of the bones. Dodd's fine art prints and paintings are in numerous private collections as well as art museums including the Portland Art Museum and the George Eastman House Museum of Photography.

Shawn Linehan is a North Carolinian native, who now calls Portland, Oregon her home. Her photography focuses on organic farming, sustainable businesses, and eco-friendly subjects as a means to examine habits of consumption in the community and in her own life. Linehan's career in the arts has included stints as an elementary school art teacher, commercial photographer, and Graphics Specialist at specialty lens manufacturer LensBaby.

Paul Thacker lives and works in his north-light studio on his Sauvie Island farm. From behind the lens he strives to home in on the primary elements of a subject, to listen to the core resonance of a composition and to essentially "get out of the way" of the truth of the moment. Thacker began as a professional photographic printmaker he has built a successful career in documentary photography, commercial work and editorial portraiture. In October 2011, Paul will travel as an invited guest lecturer to Photo District News' Photo Plus Expo 2011 in New York City.

Julie Verdini is originally an East Coaster transplanted many years ago to live in and photograph the majestic Pacific Northwest. Verdini’s preferred subjects are the modern landscape, processes of healing, narration and symbology often binding these elements together in her photography of trees. Verdini has worked as a camera technician under award-winning camera engineer Bernie O’Doherty as well as an assistant to Fredrick Goodich ASC, a Senior Lecturer at AFI.

When: August 4 – August 27, 2011
Opening Reception
Thursday, August 4, 6-8pm

Where: The Art Institute of Portland
1122 NW Davis Street

Contact: Caitlin Moore
cahmoore@aii.edu
503/382.4843

Alexis Abrams Dad, Yosemite National Park, 2010, 13" x 19"The Art Institute of Portlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06012069922372465646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7898076098004742623.post-61618212657428863242011-07-22T15:49:00.000-07:002011-07-22T16:04:26.189-07:00

Our own Justin Auld will be showing new work this upcoming 1st Thursday at MoHDI Gallery Space, 625 NW Everett #108, in the Everett Station Lofts.

6-9pm Thursday, August 4th 2011

"These are what I have coined Quantum paintings and drawings.
The work starts with an element of chance or unpredictability within a fixed window of possibilities. I begin each work with a separation of intent and control. This is the quantum experience, allowing chance, movement and time to intersect to lay the groundwork for the imagery. Next I pick out, from what has been laid down, the shapes and images that I see. I'm sculpting the random act to pull out what has been created by infinite variables of force and action.
The intent of my adding hints of forms is to invite the viewer to explore their own unconsciousness through the general suggestion of images in the cloud forms. I've planted seeds from my own visions to allow the bridge for others. The painting will grow and change depending on the viewer's own associations and history. It moves slow. Actually, slower than slow. It moves at a speed that makes tortoises look like hares. At least that’s what it felt like for Jessica Butler.

Jessica worked at Applebee’s for eight years – first while as an undergrad at the University of Oregon (her first degree) in Eugene, then when she moved to Portland. Eventually, Jessica enrolled in the Media Arts and Animation program, from which she graduated in 2010.

Interestingly, her animation career began with a failed interview at Bent Image Lab. While she didn’t get the job, she made a good enough impression that Bent called her the next time there was an opening. Before long other companies in town were asking Jessica to do work for them. Sometimes it was glamorous work; other times it was catering for a company party. She took PA jobs even when it meant she wouldn’t have time to sleep between Applebee’s, working on set and going to class. At all times Jessica looked at opportunities to make a name for herself in this small animation town.

Nowadays Jessica is a Producer for Hive-FX, where she manages a team of 3D artists while also cultivating relationships with high profile clients like Nike, R West, and Staircase Productions. When asked about the most impactful part of her education, Jessica takes note of her foundation classes and critiques. “As a producer, being able to understand and comment on an artist’s work intelligently is invaluable.”

Jessica sees the 3D world continuing to blossom in the future. “3D work is becoming more and more realistic and the demand is high. I expect the field to continue to grow exponentially with lighting and texture artists being the most valuable assets.”

As long as no one asks Hive to render 3D riblets, the future looks bright.

The Art Institute of Portlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06012069922372465646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7898076098004742623.post-14822212827695140482010-12-03T09:33:00.000-08:002010-12-03T09:39:49.304-08:005th Annual Holiday BazaarDecember 5th, 2010

If you want to give great design this holiday season, stop by our Holiday Bazaar and shop for gifts handmade by The Art Institute of Portland's creative community -- benefiting the Creative Arts Scholarship Fund!

We'll have jewelry, original art, knitted goods, cards, apparel, and some amazing re-purposed home goods courtesy of our Trash to Cash Industrial Design class!

Open to the public (that means you) during the following hours:

First Thursday, December 2: 5:30pm-9pm
Friday, December 3: 10am-5pm
Saturday, December 4: 10am-5pm

Cash only, please!

The Art Institute of Portlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06012069922372465646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7898076098004742623.post-21048250070781253822010-11-23T12:27:00.000-08:002010-11-23T12:40:06.440-08:00Alumni Success Story: Columbia Sportswear's Katelyn Reeling

We're always proud of the alums from the Art Institute of Portland, but we're especially proud of the ones who clean the popcorn machine after the portfolio show. That’s the question AI 2009 graduate Katelyn Reeling asks herself these days. Having moved from tiny Bishop, California to Portland specifically so she could go to school in the nation’s active wear capital, you can imagine the euphoria she felt when she began working as an Associate Apparel Designer at Columbia Sportswear last year.

Yet the path to Katelyn’s dream job wasn’t always clear. She graduated in March, 2009 in as bleak an economic climate as any in the past 50 years. After several online applications yielded no results she decided to take a part-time job at the Columbia retail store in the Portland airport. The idea was to stay busy and do something related to her field. Even though it may have seemed like a step backwards at the time – you don’t exactly need a degree in apparel design to work in retail – it was this decision that ultimately led to Katelyn landing her dream job.

7

After a few months, things took a turn for the better. Katelyn impressed her supervisors at the retail store. The economy began to improve. Suddenly the Columbia corporate office – which had been on a hiring freeze – was hiring again. As an employee at the retail store, Katelyn’s name was now in the Columbia computer system. This time she applied and her application rose to the top. She was hired as an intern. She showed talent, enthusiasm and as luck would have it, a full-time position opened in her department. Katelyn interviewed and was hired. In nine months she went from a part-time employee to a full-time Associate Apparel Designer.

This isn’t the kind of story that will work for everyone. There is never a guarantee of being promoted from a company’s retail store to their corporate headquarters. However, what Katelyn did is what the savvy ones do: she sized up the situation and, though working in retail wasn’t her dream job, she knew the overall product was something of interest to her. Within a few months she went from selling that product to actually helping design it.

Katelyn’s advice, not surprisingly, is to keep trying new things and always look for purpose in them. When in school, she recognized that every class – even the ones she didn’t like – had a purpose. Down the road, this mindset paid off. Now she just has to figure out what to do next.
The Art Institute of Portlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06012069922372465646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7898076098004742623.post-9188561140095047292010-11-15T08:27:00.000-08:002010-11-16T07:49:21.161-08:00Alumni Success Story: Team Bondi's Luc Cote

This past Thursday, November 11th, Rockstar games released a trailer for their 2011 release L.A. This is simply false. Every student at this school experiences doubt. Once the doubt creeps in, it's a matter of how you respond to it. For this very reason, one of my favorite success stories from this school is Rebecca Dallas. Read her story of overcoming doubt below, then check out her national success story.

Nike receives thousands of resumes daily. With that kind of demand to work there, you can imagine how big a compliment it is to receive a phone call from them specifically to recruit you.

Of course, if you’re Rebecca Dallas (B.S. Design Management, 2008), you don’t have to imagine that. With Rebecca it actually happened.

So why did Nike call? Did she win a contest? Did they mistakenly call Rebecca Dallas instead of Rebecca Dulles?

In truth Nike called her for two reasons: because of her talent and because they already knew her. While at The Art Institute, Rebecca did contract work for Nike. She did contract work because she kept in touch with a Nike employee she had met for coffee. She met a Nike employee for coffee because she asked her instructors if they knew anyone at Nike. She asked her instructors if they knew anyone at Nike because…well, that’s just the kind of thing Rebecca Dallas does.

Rebecca isn’t super talented in everything. Heck, she almost failed out of the ID program her first year at AI. She is, however, insanely driven to succeed and be involved. She was always the student who asked enough questions in class to be sure she understood everything. She was a school ambassador, a peer mentor and a member of Brash Creative. As soon as she discovered Design Management, everything clicked. The idea of being the liaison between the creative side and the business side fit her perfectly.

“I like to make work as personable as possible,” Rebecca says and indeed being personable is crucial to her position as Production Specialist at Nike. Rebecca's day is spent managing and producing product imagery assets with internal and external Nike teams.

Once the imagery has been produced, she then distributes it across Nike and Nike Affiliated websites (such as the Nike store, Air Jordan, Livestrong, and UMBRO). She orders samples, approves images and talks to people all over the world. Whether she is on a conference call to Belgium or emailing someone in her own building, Rebecca ensures the best of what Nike can offer is available to consumers in the digital market.

Rebecca sees her college major as one that will be of utmost importance in the future. “I see a need for Design Managers developing. The creative world needs people in power that can act strategically but think creatively. We are a new breed and will be a useful tool for the creative world to embrace and the rigid world to challenge.”

And as for advice she’d give to the thousands of people who apply to Nike every day? It has a lot to do with your talent and drive, and not much to do with being a specific type of person.

“I’m not Miss Sporty Spice. I don’t know athletes. I’m a rocker chick with tattoos. You don’t have to be an athlete to work at Nike. You just have to be true to yourself and confident in your abilities.”

The Art Institute of Portlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06012069922372465646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7898076098004742623.post-36413948423078348282010-10-22T16:37:00.001-07:002010-10-22T16:47:06.612-07:00Free Events in Portland: Oct 22-24All weekend

Davis Graveyard: The haunting continues through early November. 8703 SE 43rd Ave in Milwaukie.
Saturday, October 23

West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta: Watch people paddle across the lake in giant, hollow-out pumpkins.
