Meet the designers:
Germaine Barnard
Bachelor of Fine Arts Apparel Design,
minor in Sustainability
Fall 2011 graduate
As a little girl, Germaine Barnard learned from her mom how to sew. Originally from Pleasant Hill, Calif., Germaine decided to pursue a career in fashion after high school. At The Art Institute of Portland, Germaine threw herself into the program and loved every minute of it. A huge fan of working as a team, she worked with several other students last year to design and construct separate collections for an eco-friendly fashion show at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee. She loves to read, and pulls from literature for design inspiration.
Lindsay Chapel
Bachelor of Fine Arts Apparel Design
Fall 2011 graduate
Lindsay Chapel is a designer that is dedicated to bringing beauty and excitement into the world. She lives by the motto "those who seek beauty will find it." She explores creative concepts through provocative vibrant colors and non-traditional silhouettes. She likes to marry forward contemporary details with classic ideals. Through fashion Lindsay aims to become inspired in order to continue inspiring others.
Natayla Hebert
Bachelor of Fine Arts Apparel Design
Summer 2011 graduate
After watching the Drew Barrymore film "Ever After" as an eight year old, Natalya Hebert knew that she wanted to be a designer. Her conviction was so great that Natalya enrolled at The Art Institute of Portland even before high school graduation. She has thrived as a designer despite several obstacles. In fact, a minor setback involving car trouble led her to the junkyard and the idea behind her senior collection. Night Junkie is a unique mix of roughness, raw color, and her own interpretation of the formality of the pleat.
Amy Sim
Bachelor of Fine Arts Apparel Design
Current student
Amy Sim began sewing on her mother's Singer Featherweight sewing machine at the age of nine. Throughout junior high and high school, Amy developed her skills and created the majority of her wardrobe. She headed to Oregon State University to major in Apparel Design, where a college professor suggested that a more "practical" degree would be Home Economics Education. Amy listened to that advice and changed her major. For many years, Amy's passion for fashion design was put on the back burner as she raised two sons and became a certified instructor and owner of a Jazzercise franchise. When her sons were in college, Amy made the bold decision to return to school and pursue her dream degree in Apparel Design. Her expertise shows in the beautiful workmanship of the garments she creates. Amy is inspired by the classic fashion icons Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Jacqueline Kennedy, and aspires to design special pieces with clean lines, supreme quality and exquisite details. Amy resides in Portland with her husband Tim, her "biggest fan." Sons, Brennan, 24, is in the MBA program at The University of South Alabama, and Garrett, 21, is a senior at The University of Oregon where he plays basketball for the Ducks.
