The Art Institute of Portland Gallery presents “Double Take: A Classic Revision”
Literally drawing from The Portland Art Museum’s exhibition, Allure of the Automobile, our summer Transportation Studio Industrial Design class has been working on re-imagining titans of classic automobile design for a contemporary audience. Initially the designers worked on-site at the Museum, learning the lines and developing an understanding of the history of their chosen vehicle. On returning to the studio they began to manipulate the bloodlines, updating and evolving the characteristics while maintaining a sense of heritage in the vehicle. In this, the last stage of the project, our designers will be installing their concept work in the gallery space; their sketches made at the Museum, the concept work derived, and the final piece – an automotive tape drawing. One of the industry’s oldest design techniques, a tape drawing allows the designer to style the defining lines of a car on a large sale and make immediate adjustments by simply shifting the tape.
Our designers will begin their tape drawings at the start of the exhibition and continue to build them throughout the month. We are encouraging our audience to engage and explore the design process of one of our nations most iconic industries by joining us over the course of the month and watch the process unfold first hand.
Featuring the work of:
Berin B., Kurt Budke, John Reed Dunn, Daniel Fink, Chris Hill, Jake Harwood, Tom Tice, Chris Rickmon, Larry Selbiger and Matt Thornton
Additionally, The Art Institute of Portland is proud to include our entry for the 2011 Portland Adult Soapbox Derby. Five Industrial Design Students entered the highly competitive, deceptively whimsical, and potentially deadly annual showdown. With their very first try the team placed as runner up for Rookie of the Year and 3rd best in engineering (this year’s winner tasted victory for the first time in 12 years). It is a far cry from a couple of orange crates and some baby-buggie wheels.
Featuring the work of:
Kathryn Adams, Rob LaCosse, Rob McCullough, Ben Nicholes and Scott Saunders
